As concerns grow over a potential resurgence of COVID-19, several Indian cities are reporting a steady rise in new infections. Mumbai, one of the most populous and densely populated cities in the country, has registered nearly 106 cases since January. This uptick, though currently moderate, has prompted health authorities and municipal bodies across India to increase vigilance and enhance preparedness measures.

In 2020, the wave of Covid-19 caused widespread disruption and concern across the globe. Now, a major update is emerging Covid-19 appears to be making a comeback. According to reports, a new wave of the virus is spreading again across several parts of Asia, including Singapore, Hong Kong, India, and Thailand.

As of May 23, 2025, India has recorded a total of 257 active Covid-19 cases, which, according to the  Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), represents a modest increase.

Amid a surge in Covid-19 cases in parts of Asia like Hong Kong and Singapore, several Indian states are also witnessing a noticeable rise in infections. While national case numbers remain low compared to previous waves, cities like Mumbai, Chennai, and Ahmedabad have seen a significant uptick in new infections, according to a recent report.

BMC ramping up the preparedness:

In Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged residents not to panic but to remain cautious. Health officials are closely monitoring clusters in certain areas of the city and have intensified contact tracing and testing. Hospitals have also been advised to review their COVID-19 response protocols and ensure the availability of isolation beds and necessary medical supplies.

Meanwhile, other major urban centers such as Gurgaon, Chennai, and Pune are proactively scaling up preventive actions. In Gurgaon, authorities have initiated a review of hospital readiness and have reinstated temperature checks at key public locations. Chennai’s public health department is preparing for a possible increase in cases by ramping up testing in vulnerable communities and ensuring oxygen and medicine stocks are in place.

Pune, another city with a history of significant COVID-19 waves, has already begun a campaign to raise awareness about booster vaccinations and mask-wearing in crowded places. Officials are urging citizens, especially those with comorbidities and senior citizens, to remain alert and adhere to COVID-appropriate behavior.

So far, the spike in cases remains limited, and there has been no official declaration of a new variant of concern. However, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is maintaining close coordination with state health departments and has issued advisories for surveillance, testing, and readiness.

Experts believe that while the situation is currently under control, the next few weeks will be crucial in determining the trajectory of the outbreak. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed, follow public health guidelines, and get vaccinated if they have not already completed their course or received a booster dose.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
