Congress Slams Govt for Mismanagement at Dr. Singh’s State Funeral

The Congress party has accused the government of failing to provide a dignified farewell to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh during his state funeral. Allegations of mismanagement, inadequate arrangements for his family, and breaches of protocol have sparked outrage, with Congress leader Pawan Khera calling the event a "shameful spectacle."

Accusations of disrespect and chaos marred the state funeral of Dr. Manmohan Singh, as Congress leaders criticized the government for poor organization, limited access for the public, and breaches of protocol. The alleged neglect of the late leader’s family and foreign dignitaries has drawn widespread condemnation.

The Congress party has accused the government of gross mismanagement and a lack of respect during the state funeral of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, held at Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi on Saturday, calling it a deeply undignified tribute to one of India’s most revered statesmen.

Congress leader Pawan Khera expressed outrage over the arrangements, stating that the ceremony failed to honor Dr. Singh’s legacy with the respect it deserved. “No news agencies except Doordarshan (DD) were allowed. Even DD focused primarily on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, offering minimal coverage of Dr. Singh’s family,” Khera alleged.

Highlighting further lapses, Khera revealed that only three chairs were allocated in the front row for Dr. Singh’s family, compelling Congress leaders to intervene and secure seats for his daughters and other relatives.

In a post on X, Khera wrote, “The Prime Minister and ministers did not stand up when the National Flag was handed to the widow of the late Prime Minister or during the gun salute. The family was given inadequate space around the pyre due to the presence of soldiers. The public was kept out, forced to observe from outside the venue.”

He also criticized Home Minister Amit Shah’s motorcade for disrupting the funeral procession, leaving family cars stranded outside the gates. Family members had to be located and escorted back into the venue. Khera noted that Dr. Singh’s grandchildren struggled to perform the last rites due to cramped arrangements around the pyre.

Diplomats in attendance were reportedly seated in separate areas, making them largely invisible during the proceedings. Khera further claimed that the Prime Minister failed to stand as a gesture of respect when the King of Bhutan stood during the ceremony.

“The entire funeral area was poorly organized and overcrowded, leaving many participants with no space. This shameful treatment of a towering statesman underscores the government’s misplaced priorities and disregard for democratic values. Dr. Singh deserved dignity, not this chaotic spectacle,” Khera stated.

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
