July 23, 2025 –Panic gripped passengers on IndiGo flight IG07966 when an engine burst into flames just as the aircraft was preparing to take off from Ahmedabad, forcing the pilot to abort the flight.

The flight with 60 passengers onboard was scheduled to depart from Ahmedabad to Diu was forced to abort takeoff on Tuesday morning after the crew detected a suspected engine fire, prompting the pilot to issue a Mayday distress call.

The incident occurred while the aircraft was accelerating on the runway when the crew spotted signs of engine trouble, potentially a fire. In line with safety protocols, the pilot immediately declared a Mayday, signaling an urgent emergency to air traffic control (ATC). The takeoff was swiftly aborted, bringing the plane to a halt on the runway.

In aviation, such an incident is formally known as a “rejected takeoff” or RTO. Pilots are trained to make this call if any malfunction—such as an engine fire, warning alarms, or control issues—arises during takeoff before reaching decision speed (V₁), ensuring a safe stop on the runway

The flight’s rapid and well-coordinated handling has been praised by airline officials and aviation experts. They emphasized that the crew’s prompt Mayday call and adherence to protocol were crucial in preventing a potential disaster. Quick coordination with ATC, ground control, and emergency teams ensured passenger safety and minimized runway disruption.

Although the flight has been grounded for thorough technical inspection and maintenance, the airline issued an apology for the inconvenience and is making arrangements for passengers on alternate flights.
