Tensions rose in Nagpur, Maharashtra on Monday following a clash between two groups during a protest by a right-wing organization advocating for the dismantling of Aurangzeb’s tomb, resulting in vandalism and arson.
Numerous vehicles were set ablaze and stones were thrown in the Mahal region of Nagpur. Furthermore, blasts were audible on the vehicles that were set on fire. An official from the Fire Brigade stated that two JCBs were ignited and one firefighter sustained injuries.
“Two JCBs (were set ablaze) and a few more vehicles were also impacted. One fireman is injured,” he told news agency ANI.
As per news agency PTI, the unrest took place shortly after Muslim groups alleged that members of a Hindu organization set fire to a cloth bearing “kalma” during a demonstration calling for the demolition of Aurangzeb’s tomb.
According to the most recent reports, four individuals sustained injuries following a confrontation between demonstrators and the police, who reacted by deploying tear gas and using batons, as stated by officials.
Videos shared by ANI displayed burning vehicles and scattered rubble.
Authorities hurried to the location to manage the unrest and restore order. Extra staff have been assigned to avert additional disturbances. A high-ranking police official verified that security measures had been enhanced in critical areas, featuring the deployment of Quick Response Teams (QRT), Riot Control Police, and the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF).
