Pride echoed through the hills of Churachandpur as Inspector Jeffrey Hmingchullo of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) returned to his hometown, greeted by a jubilant crowd after being awarded the Shaurya Chakra, one of India’s most prestigious peacetime gallantry awards.
On May 22, at a solemn ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Droupadi Murmu presented the Shaurya Chakra to Inspector Hmingchullo for his remarkable bravery during a high-stakes anti-Maoist operation in Jharkhand’s Chatra district. Amid intense gunfire, he neutralised two Maoist insurgents and protected his team from grave danger—a feat that earned him recognition from the highest levels of government.
Back in his native village in the Kuki-dominated Churachandpur district, the atmosphere was electric. Locals poured into the streets to welcome their son with cheers, garlands, and traditional songs. For the people of Churachandpur, Hmingchullo’s return wasn’t just a homecoming—it was a celebration of courage and identity.

The Hmar Youth Association (HYA) organised a grand felicitation ceremony in his honour. Village elders, youths, and neighbours gathered under one roof to pay tribute, many moved to tears by the pride his act had brought to their remote hill district.
“This award is not just mine,” said Inspector Jeffrey Hmingchullo, according to media reports. “It belongs to every jawan who puts the nation before self. As a Mahar from the Mizo community, I hope my story inspires young officers and soldiers to serve with courage and heart.”The Quiet Pillar Behind the Medal
In the crowd stood his mother, F. Muani, her eyes moist, her pride unmistakable. “He is serving the nation, and I thank God for this honour,” she said , overwhelmed by the love pouring in for her son. “It’s a day I will never forget.”
Inspector Hmingchullo’s journey reflects a larger, often overlooked narrative—the steady contribution of Manipur’s tribal communities to India’s armed forces. From the remote hill ranges to the nation’s frontlines, tribal youths have long carried a tradition of discipline, sacrifice, and patriotism.
His gallantry is not just a personal milestone—it is a symbol of hope for many young men and women in the region who dream of making a difference. At a time when Manipur faces deep divides and uncertainty, his story offers unity, pride, and the reassurance that heroes do rise—even from the most distant corners of the nation.
