December 25, 2025: China on Thursday strongly rejected a recent Pentagon report that alleged Beijing was easing border tensions with India as part of a strategy to weaken growing ties between New Delhi and Washington, calling the claims misleading and politically motivated.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the report misrepresented China’s defence policy and was intended to create divisions between China and other countries. Speaking at a media briefing in Beijing, Lin accused the United States of using such assessments to justify its own military dominance and to provoke confrontation.
The Chinese defence ministry also dismissed the report’s conclusions. Spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang described it as biased and said it exaggerated what he termed the “so-called Chinese military threat,” thereby misleading the international community. Zhang rejected references to expanding China–Pakistan defence and space cooperation and suggestions that Beijing was considering establishing a military base in Pakistan, urging Washington to stop spreading false narratives.
Currently, the situation along the China-India border is generally stable, and communication channels between the two sides remain smooth. Addressing the sections related to India, Lin said China viewed its relationship with New Delhi from a long-term and strategic perspective. He emphasised Beijing’s willingness to strengthen communication, build mutual trust, expand cooperation, and manage differences to ensure stable and healthy bilateral ties. On the Line of Actual Control, Lin said the boundary issue was strictly a matter between China and India and maintained that the current situation along the border remained generally stable, with communication mechanisms functioning smoothly.
The Pentagon’s annual report to the US Congress, titled Military and Security Developments Involving the People’s Republic of China 2025, had warned that China might be using relative calm along the Line of Actual Control to stabilise relations with India and prevent New Delhi from moving closer to Washington. The report cited a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in October 2024 as part of this assessment.

The report also claimed that China had broadened the scope of its “core interests” to include Taiwan, sovereignty claims in the South China Sea, the Senkaku Islands, and Arunachal Pradesh. It further pointed to deepening China–Pakistan cooperation in defence and space sectors, adding that Beijing had likely explored the possibility of establishing a military facility in Pakistan.
Beijing has firmly denied these assertions, reiterating that it remains committed to regional stability and constructive engagement with neighbouring countries, including India.
