On Wednesday, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister-designate Chandrababu Naidu is scheduled to take the oath of office. Five years after the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) lost to the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) in the 2019 Assembly elections, Naidu is set to take office again. The pivotal encounter between Chandrababu Naidu and Bill Gates, during which Naidu showcased his unwavering commitment to technology, paved the way for Microsoft’s establishment in Hyderabad. This historic meeting underscores Naidu’s foresight and strategic vision in positioning Hyderabad as a burgeoning tech hub on the global stage.
Naidu’s situation took a sharp turn in September 2023 when he was detained by the ruling YSRCP on charges of corruption. His fortunes have since turned around in a short of months. Naidu was so imprisoned for almost two months prior to the high court granting him bail.
Naidu’s Rise to Power and Tech Legacy: The Bill Gates Encounter
In 1995, Naidu took over as the chief minister of the united Andhra in a midnight coup that removed his father-in-law, NT Rama Rao. Because of his role in establishing Hyderabad as a technology hub, he is among the few politicians who enjoy public support for business and technology.
The encounter between Naidu and Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, which opened the way for the tech giant to establish a presence in Hyderabad, India, is one of the well-known events that supports this assertion.
In 2017, Naidu recounted the story of how, in the late 1990s, he was able to secure an audience with Bill Gates during the AP AgTech Summit.

Gates was working in New Delhi. I made touch with US officials to schedule a meeting. They informed me that he was really busy, but if I was really interested, I could go to an evening cocktail party,” he added.
He claimed to have been the first Indian politician to make a laptop presentation, describing how he persuaded Gates to establish Microsoft’s research center in Hyderabad.
Although Gates was only scheduled to meet with Naidu for ten minutes, the former Microsoft CEO ended up spending forty minutes with him. Naidu claimed that during that discussion, Gates informed him that Microsoft would take into consideration his suggestion if they ever wanted to create a center outside of the US.
The leader of the TDP bragged, “Not only did Microsoft open its development center in Hyderabad, but Satya Nadella, who is from here, became Microsoft CEO.”

In addition, Gates provided information from their two-decade-old meeting during the summit’s valedictory. “I have heard that there is a person who has an even stronger belief in digital technology than you have. It was difficult to believe, but when we first met, he was in possession of his computer and vision for improving government through the use of cutting-edge technologies, according to Gates.
