Centre moves Delhi LG Saxena to Ladakh in major governors’ reshuffle

President Droupadi Murmu approved a sweeping reshuffle of governors and lieutenant governors, shifting Vinai Kumar Saxena from Delhi to Ladakh and appointing former ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu as the new LG of the national capital.

In the shake-up announced by Rashtrapati Bhavan, R. N. Ravi was moved from Tamil Nadu to become governor of West Bengal after the resignation of C. V. Ananda Bose.

New Delhi, Mar 5 — President of India Droupadi Murmu has accepted the resignation of West Bengal governor C. V. Ananda Bose and approved a major reshuffle of governors and lieutenant governors across several states and union territories, including the transfer of Delhi lieutenant governor Vinai Kumar Saxena to Ladakh and the appointment of former diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu as the new LG of the national capital.

In a communiqué issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday, the President approved multiple appointments and transfers affecting key constitutional posts.

Saxena, who has served as the lieutenant governor of Delhi since May 2022, has been appointed lieutenant governor of the union territory of Ladakh. He will replace Kavinder Gupta, who has been named the next governor of Himachal Pradesh.

Sandhu, a former Indian ambassador to the United States and a veteran diplomat with decades of service in the foreign service, will take over as lieutenant governor of Delhi. The post carries significant administrative responsibilities in the national capital, where the LG represents the central government.

In another key change, R. N. Ravi, currently governor of Tamil Nadu, has been appointed governor of West Bengal following Bose’s resignation. Meanwhile, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, the governor of Kerala, will discharge the functions of governor of Tamil Nadu until further arrangements are made.

The reshuffle also includes changes in several other states.

Shiv Pratap Shukla, the current governor of Himachal Pradesh, has been appointed governor of Telangana. In turn, Telangana governor Jishnu Dev Varma has been appointed governor of Maharashtra.

Former Bihar deputy chief minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Nand Kishore Yadav has been appointed governor of Nagaland.

Meanwhile, former Northern Army commander Syed Ata Hasnain, a retired lieutenant general of the Indian Army, has been appointed governor of Bihar.

According to the presidential communiqué, all the appointments and transfers will take effect from the dates the respective appointees assume charge of their offices.

List of New Appointments

(i)          Shri Shiv Pratap Shukla, Governor of Himachal Pradesh appointed as Governor of Telangana.

(ii)        Shri Jishnu Dev Varma, Governor of Telangana appointed as Governor of Maharashtra.

(iii)      Shri Nand Kishore Yadav appointed as Governor of Nagaland.

(iv)       Lt. General (Retired) Syed Ata Hasnain appointed as Governor of Bihar.

(v)         Shri R.N. Ravi, Governor of Tamil Nadu appointed as Governor West Bengal.

(vi)       Shri Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Governor of Kerala to discharge the functions of Governor of Tamil Nadu.

(vii)     Shri Kavinder Gupta, Lt. Governor of Ladakh appointed as Governor of Himachal Pradesh.

(viii)   Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena, Lt. Governor of Delhi appointed as Lt. Governor of Ladakh.

(ix)       Shri Taranjit Singh Sandhu appointed as Lt. Governor of Delhi.

3.     The above appointments will take effect from the dates they will assume charge of their respective offices.
