US singer Mary Millben said on Friday that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is a “pathway to peace for Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists seeking religious freedom” and commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his “compassionate leadership” over its implementation in India. CAA was referred to by her as a “true act of democracy.”
“Millben Responds to US Concerns Over CAA, Praises PM Modi’s Leadership”
Millben was responding to the US’s “concernence” over the CAA rules’ announcement. After touching PM Modi’s feet during his June 2023 visit to the US, the African-American singer went viral, saying that the US should strive to be a better democratic partner in tone when PM Modi is re-elected for a third term.
“@StateDept, PM @narendramodi is demonstrating compassionate leadership towards those being persecuted for their faith and providing a home to them in #India. A pathway to peace for Christians/Hindus/Sikhs/Jain/Buddhists seeking #religiousfreedom. When the PM is reelected for a third term, aim to be a better democratic partner in tone. The Citizen Amendment Act is a true act of democracy,” she wrote on X.

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller stated earlier in the day that the US is “concerned” about the CAA’s implementation in India and is closely monitoring it. “We are keeping a careful eye on how this act is carried out. “Fundamental democratic principles include respect for religious freedom and treating all communities equally under the law,” he stated.

“India Defends CAA as Internal Matter, Rejects US Criticism”
India swiftly responded to Miller’s remarks, declaring that the CAA is “India’s internal matter” and that the US’s remarks regarding its implementation were “misplaced, misinformed, and unwarranted.
“As you are fully aware, the CAA 2019 is an internal matter of India and aligns with the country’s longstanding commitment to human rights as well as its inclusive traditions.Regarding the US State Department’s statement regarding the implementation of the CAA, and based on comments from a number of other people, we believe it to be out of context, inaccurate, and unnecessary. All Indian citizens are guaranteed the freedom of religion by the country’s constitution, spokeswoman for the ministry of external affairs Randhir Jaiswal stated at a press conference.
