More than 10 MLAs, including eight from the BJP, met Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal on Wednesday to stake claim to form a new government in the state. Independent MLA Sapam Nishikanta Singh, speaking to the media, said the delegation submitted a letter signed by 22 NDA legislators expressing their desire to install a popular government.
“The people want a government of their choice. That is why we met the Governor,” said Nishikanta. “We discussed several issues, including how President’s Rule might function differently once a popular government is formed. But our primary goal is the formation of a new government. The Governor responded positively,” he added.
Singh expressed optimism that the transition would happen soon, urging public support and reaffirming the NDA’s collective interest in restoring elected leadership.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh also met the Governor to discuss the state’s volatile situation, especially the ongoing protests related to the Gwaltabi incident. He urged the Governor to initiate dialogue with protestors to defuse tensions.

The protests erupted after security forces allegedly stopped a state-run bus carrying journalists to the Shirui Lily Festival in Ukhrul on May 20 and compelled the staff to cover the state’s name on the windshield with white paper. The incident triggered widespread anger in the Meitei-dominated Imphal Valley.

Singh said he also briefed the Governor on the plight of internally displaced people living in relief camps and the severe disruptions caused by the blockade of national highways.
“I requested the Governor to take steps to disarm miscreants possessing illegal weapons. Only then can peace return,” Singh said.
He also welcomed the Ministry of Home Affairs’ move to set a 30-day deadline to identify illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar. “I submitted documents from 2021 when efforts began under then minister Letpao Haokip to identify such individuals,” he said.
