Following rumours that Chief Minister N Biren Singh might resign, things moved quickly in Manipur on Friday. At 3 o’clock, the chief minister was supposed to meet with the governor.
Biren Singh emphasised that he would not be stepping down after locals tore up his resignation letter and voiced their opposition to his intention of resigning as chief minister.
An Imphal-based daily had earlier reported that the Manipur chief minister had been advised to resign or the Centre would take over.
In response to the story, a group of ladies gathered outside the Raj Bhavan and secretariat of the Manipur Chief Minister, pleading with Biren Singh not to step down.
According to news agency PTI, they requested that the Chief Minister take a “firm stand against the troublemakers” in their place.
Three individuals were murdered in a shooting that took place on Thursday between security personnel and suspected rioters in a recent violent event in Manipur.
