Bibek Debroy, key advisor to PM Modi passes away

Eminent economist and Chairman of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council, Dr. Bibek Debroy, passed away today at the age of 69.

Eminent economist and Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, Dr. Bibek Debroy, passed away today at the age of 69. Known for his extensive contributions to economic policy and public discourse, Dr. Debroy was a Padma Shri awardee and previously served as Chancellor of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics in Pune. His death, confirmed by AIIMS Delhi, was due to an intestinal obstruction.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered heartfelt condolences, describing Dr. Debroy as a “towering scholar.” In his social media tribute, PM Modi wrote, “Dr. Bibek Debroy Ji was a towering scholar, well-versed in diverse domains like economics, history, culture, politics, spirituality, and more. Through his works, he left an indelible mark on India’s intellectual landscape. Beyond his contributions to public policy, he enjoyed working on our ancient texts, making them accessible to the youth.”

Educated at Ramakrishna Mission School in Narendrapur, Presidency College in Kolkata, Delhi School of Economics, and Trinity College, Cambridge, Dr. Debroy was highly regarded for his scholarly achievements. He held positions at Presidency College, the Gokhale Institute, the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, and led a Ministry of Finance and UNDP project on legal reforms.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also expressed sorrow, stating, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Bibek Debroy. He was a distinguished economist, a prolific author, and an outstanding academician. His insights into economic policy enriched India’s development discourse and illuminated the lives of millions. Dr. Debroy leaves a lasting legacy in the fields of economics, academia, and literature. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. May the Almighty grant Sadgati to the departed. Om Shanti.”

A member of NITI Aayog until June 2019, Dr. Debroy was a prolific writer, authoring and editing numerous books, research papers, and popular columns in major newspapers. His contributions have shaped India’s economic thought and inspired generations of young minds
