January 30, 2026: C.J. Roy, Chairman and Managing Director of the Bengaluru-based real estate major Confident Group, died by suicide on Friday during an Income Tax department raid at his office in the city, triggering shockwaves across Karnataka’s business and political circles.
According to preliminary reports, Roy allegedly shot himself inside his chamber while officials from the Income Tax Department were conducting a search operation as part of an ongoing financial investigation. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Senior police officers and forensic teams later reached the spot, and an investigation has been launched to ascertain the exact sequence of events.
Raid and Incident
The incident reportedly occurred at the Confident Group’s corporate office located in the central business district of Bengaluru. Sources indicated that the Income Tax raid was part of a broader probe into alleged financial irregularities, including suspected tax evasion and possible money laundering activities.
Officials present at the scene said Roy had been cooperating with the investigation before suddenly taking the extreme step. While initial information suggests suicide, police have stated that all possibilities, including procedural lapses and security concerns, are being examined.
Senior law enforcement officials confirmed that CCTV footage, digital records, and witness statements are being reviewed to establish a clear timeline of events. A magisterial inquiry has also been ordered.

Who Was C.J. Roy?
C.J. Roy was among Bengaluru’s most prominent real estate developers and was widely regarded as a visionary entrepreneur who helped transform several semi-urban zones into prime residential and commercial corridors.
A native of Kerala, Roy began his career in the construction sector in the late 1990s and went on to establish the Confident Group, which became one of South India’s leading real estate firms. The company developed numerous residential townships, luxury apartments, villas, and commercial complexes across Bengaluru, Kochi, Chennai, and other major cities.
Roy was particularly credited with identifying high-growth zones early, including Sarjapur Road, Whitefield, and parts of Outer Ring Road, long before they became real estate hotspots. Industry peers often described him as a sharp market forecaster with an aggressive expansion strategy.
Legal and Financial Pressures
In recent years, the Confident Group had reportedly come under the scanner of central agencies over alleged financial discrepancies. Sources indicated that multiple regulatory probes were underway, though no formal conviction had been recorded against Roy or his firm.
The Income Tax raid on Friday was believed to be part of a larger nationwide investigation into high-value property transactions and unaccounted assets. Officials have not yet disclosed the findings of the operation.

Shock Across Business and Political Circles
News of Roy’s death sent shockwaves across Karnataka’s real estate and business communities. Several industry leaders described him as a bold entrepreneur whose projects reshaped Bengaluru’s urban landscape.
Messages of condolence poured in from political leaders, developers, and trade associations, many expressing disbelief at the tragic turn of events.
“This is a deeply tragic loss. C.J. Roy was instrumental in Bengaluru’s real estate growth story,” said a senior industry representative.
Family and Legacy
Roy is survived by his wife and children. Family members have reached Bengaluru, and last rites are expected to be held after the completion of legal formalities.
Despite controversies, Roy’s legacy as one of the architects of modern Bengaluru’s property boom remains significant, with dozens of landmark residential and commercial projects standing as testimony to his influence.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and are continuing investigations. Officials emphasized that no conclusions would be drawn until forensic and ballistic reports are received.
Authorities also stated that detailed statements from Income Tax officials and staff present during the raid will form a critical part of the inquiry.
