The NDA secured a significant win in Maharashtra, as the BJP clinched 132 seats, further establishing itself as the dominant party in the state. In Jharkhand, the JMM-Congress alliance achieved impressive results, earning a consecutive second term.
In Maharashtra, the Mahayuti alliance, led by the BJP, Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction, and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena, easily crossed the halfway point. The coalition secured 233 seats. The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) opposition secured victory in 49 out of the 288 Assembly seats. The threshold in Maharashtra is set at 145.
The powerful Mahayuti coalition managed to secure Maharashtra with a significant mandate. During a press conference following their win, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his deputies, Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, credited the Ladki Bahin Yojana, a scheme focused on women’s welfare, as a significant factor in their success, calling it a “game changer”.
In Jharkhand, the JMM-led coalition regained power for the second time in a row. The coalition secured victory in 56 out of the 81 seats in the assembly. JMM, led by Hemant Soren, secured 24 seats, while its partner Congress obtained 16 seats.
Hemant Soren, the Chief Minister, emerged victorious in Barhait, while his wife, Kalpana Soren, secured a win in Gandey. The BJP state leader Babulal Marandi was ahead in Dhanwar, while ex-Chief Minister Champai Soren, who joined BJP from JMM, secured victory in Seraikela by a margin of 20,000 votes.
Jharkhand experienced a fierce fight in the beginning, but Hemant Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) led ruling coalition eventually surpassed the majority of 41 seats in the 81-member assembly, with the alliance securing 56 seats. The NDA came in second place far behind, securing 24 seats.
48 assembly by-elections in 13 states and two important parliamentary seats in Maharashtra’s Nanded and Kerala’s Wayanad are also awaiting the verdict.
Wayanad, left by Rahul Gandhi, was seen as an important election for the Congress. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who ran in her first election from the Kerala seat, easily secured victory in the parliamentary constituency.
