Mizoram has witnessed a surge in drug hauls in recent months, linked to cross-border trafficking from Myanmar.

BY PC Bureau

August 21, 2025: In a major anti-narcotics operation, the Assam Rifles on Wednesday seized 3.33 kilograms (30,300 tablets) of methamphetamine and 190.90 grams of heroin No. 4, valued at approximately ₹10.74 crore, from the general area of Crossing Point 3, Zokhawthar, Mizoram. A kenbo bike and a mobile phone were also recovered during the operation. The seized items have been handed over to the Excise and Narcotics Department, Champhai, for further investigation.

This seizure adds to a series of recent major drug busts in Mizoram, which has emerged as a critical entry point for narcotics smuggled in from Myanmar. With its porous border and difficult terrain, Zokhawthar and other parts of Champhai district have become vulnerable transit corridors for methamphetamine and heroin trafficked from Myanmar’s infamous Golden Triangle region.

Officials say Mizoram has witnessed an uptick in drug seizures in recent months due to both increased trafficking activity from across the border and heightened surveillance by security agencies. The ongoing political turmoil in Myanmar has reportedly pushed narcotics syndicates to ramp up smuggling through Mizoram, where cross-border routes are comparatively less guarded than in Manipur. Assam Rifles and state agencies have stepped up joint operations, leading to record seizures.

Parallel Crackdown in Manipur
Meanwhile, Manipur Police also reported a major bust on Tuesday under Kakching Police Station in the Imphal Valley. Three persons — Thinmai Kaisidindou Liangmei (53) of Taban village (Tamenglong district), Lunghipuiliu (37) of Kawalong (Tamenglong), and Nanathongliu (42) of Makui (Kangpokpi) — were arrested with 91 soap cases containing heroin powder weighing 1.12 kilograms. Police also recovered a Bolero vehicle, five mobile phones, and two Aadhaar cards.

Sources said the arrests are part of intensified anti-narcotics drives across Manipur valley districts, including Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching. In recent weeks, multiple seizures of heroin, WY (World is Yours) tablets, and brown sugar have underscored the valley’s role as a key transit corridor for narcotics smuggling.

With both Mizoram and Manipur witnessing escalating seizures, security officials warn that the India-Myanmar border remains one of the most challenging fronts in the fight against drug trafficking in the Northeast.
