AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal addressed a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting the central government to add the Jat community to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) list, thus enabling reservations in education and employment. He charged the Centre with deceiving the Jats for the last decade and claimed that the BJP only thinks of the Jats as elections near.
Delhi will hold elections in one phase on February 5 to choose 70 candidates for the Assembly. The Jats have considerable sway in Delhi, with their community estimated to represent around 8-10 percent of the voters.
“The Jat community in Delhi feels deceived by Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and the BJP over the last decade.” The Jat community in Delhi is not granted reservation in any college, university, or institution under the Central Government. “The Prime Minister and Home Minister only think of the Jats in Delhi during election time,” Kejriwal stated at a press conference in New Delhi on Friday.
In his correspondence with the Prime Minister, Kejriwal pointed out that Jat community individuals from Rajasthan receive OBC reservation advantages under the central list, whereas those from the same community in Delhi are excluded from these benefits at central institutions like Delhi University.
“Delhi has seven central government universities. Delhi University has numerous colleges. Numerous positions exist in various central government institutions such as Delhi Police, NDMC, DDA, AIIMS, Safdarjung, and Ram Manohar Lohia where central government regulations apply. In this scenario, owing to this violation of commitment by the central government, countless youths from Delhi’s OBC community are facing injustice,” Kejriwal mentioned in the letter.
He called on the Centre to discard its “partial stance” concerning the Jat community and five other OBC castes, stressing the importance of swiftly “rectifying the discrepancies” in the Central OBC list.
