In the annals of Indian history, few figures stand as tall as Dr. Manmohan Singh, a scholar, economist, and statesman whose quiet demeanor belied his extraordinary contributions to the nation. From leading India out of economic despair to embodying humility on the global stage, his journey is a testament to the power of intellect, perseverance, and unassuming leadership.

An Unexpected Political Journey
When the then Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao offered him the role of Finance Minister in 1991, Dr. Singh hesitated, saying:
“I am not a politician. Are you sure I am the right person?”
Rao’s response proved prophetic:
“Precisely why you are perfect for the job.”

Dr. Singh’s non-political background became his greatest asset, allowing him to approach challenges with objectivity and expertise. This appointment led to one of India’s most transformative economic eras, proving that vision and dedication often outweigh political pedigree.

The Day He Saved India’s Economy
The year was 1991, and India was on the brink of an economic collapse. Foreign reserves dwindled, inflation soared, and a crippling “license raj” stifled entrepreneurship. Enter Dr. Singh, then the newly appointed Finance Minister, entrusted by Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao with the daunting task of economic reform.
In a landmark budget speech, Dr. Singh boldly proclaimed to Parliament:
“No power on Earth can stop an idea whose time has come.”
These words heralded a new era for India. By dismantling the stifling regulatory framework and opening the economy to global markets, he transformed India into one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. This pivotal moment in history marked not just economic recovery but the genesis of modern India’s global ambitions.
The Scholar Who Didn’t Forget His Roots
Dr. Singh’s journey began in Gah, a small village in Punjab, now part of Pakistan. Born into modest circumstances, he studied under the dim glow of a kerosene lamp, a symbol of his perseverance against adversity. Decades later, as Prime Minister, he returned to his birthplace, where he reflected:
“I am a child of this soil, and whatever I am today, it is because of this land.”
This heartfelt acknowledgment of his humble beginnings underscores the values that guided his life—hard work, gratitude, and an enduring connection to his roots.

Humility at the United Nations
Dr. Singh’s humility was not confined to his early life; it shone even on the global stage. During a 2005 United Nations meeting, he surprised fellow leaders by standing in line with other delegates for lunch, refusing VIP privileges. When questioned about it, he replied:
“Why should I cut the queue? Everyone’s time is valuable.”
This simple act of modesty won admiration worldwide, showcasing a leadership style rooted in equality and respect.

A Silent Response to Criticism

It is a deeply emotional moment for me to speak about Dr Manmohan Singh

As Prime Minister, Dr. Singh faced criticism for his quiet demeanor, earning the label of a “silent PM.” His measured response has since become iconic:
“History will be kinder to me than the media.”
Over time, this prediction has held true, with his tenure now viewed through a lens of respect and recognition for his substantial contributions.

The Nuclear Deal Standoff

In 2008, the Indo-US Nuclear Deal became a flashpoint of political controversy. Faced with fierce opposition and the potential fall of his government, Dr. Singh stood firm, stating:
“If I am to go down, I will go down for a cause I believe in.”
His resolve ensured the deal’s success, securing India’s energy future and cementing his legacy as a leader of unwavering conviction.

The Gentleman at a Bookstore
Dr. Singh’s principles were evident even in everyday encounters. During a visit to a Delhi bookstore as Prime Minister, he quietly browsed books without fanfare. When the shopkeeper offered the books as a gift, he insisted on paying, saying:
“If I take these for free, it won’t be right. The author deserves his due.”
This anecdote captures his respect for creativity and fairness, hallmarks of his character.
The Cambridge Incident
As a young student at Cambridge University, Dr. Singh once heard a professor dismiss India’s prospects for economic progress. With quiet confidence, he replied:
“We will surprise the world one day.”
Years later, his economic reforms proved him right, placing India firmly on the global stage and fulfilling his youthful promise.
The Meeting with Sonia Gandhi

In 2004, Sonia Gandhi’s decision to appoint Dr. Singh as Prime Minister surprised many. When asked about his feelings, he humbly remarked:
“I am not a leader, but I will do my best to serve.”
This humility became a defining feature of his leadership, earning him respect across political and ideological divides.

The Grateful Farmer

Years after implementing his economic reforms, a farmer approached Dr. Singh at an event and said:
“Because of you, my children have jobs and a better life. Thank you.”
Visibly moved, Dr. Singh replied:
“It was my duty to help build a better India.”
This exchange reflects his quiet dedication to improving lives—a mission that defined his career.
A Legacy of Leadership
Dr. Manmohan Singh’s life is a compelling story of intellect, humility, and transformative leadership. From steering India through economic reform to standing in line at the United Nations, his actions have left an indelible mark on the nation and the world. In an era often dominated by loud rhetoric, his story serves as a reminder that quiet conviction can lead to the loudest achievements.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
