August 29, 2025 — A powerful cloudburst struck Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts of Uttarakhand late Thursday night, trapping families under debris, injuring several people, and leaving at least two persons missing, officials said.
The disaster occurred in Bareth Dungar Tok (Buskedar tehsil, Rudraprayag) and Deval area of Chamoli district, triggering massive debris flows that swept away houses, blocked roads, and buried livestock. According to district authorities, Tara Singh and his wife from Mopata village in Dewal tehsil are missing, while another couple, Vikram Singh and his wife, sustained injuries. Around 15–20 cattle were killed after a cowshed collapsed in the deluge.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed that rescue and relief operations were underway “on a war footing.” In a late-night post on X, he said, “Distressing reports have been received that some families are trapped due to cloudbursts in Rudraprayag and Chamoli. Relief and rescue operations are being carried out at full speed by the local administration. I am in constant contact with officials and have instructed the Disaster Secretary and District Magistrates to ensure effective rescue work. I pray to Baba Kedar for the safety of all.”
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and district administration teams have been deployed to clear debris, restore road connectivity, and evacuate residents from high-risk zones. Officials said heavy equipment is being used to reopen blocked stretches leading to remote villages.
