Lalgouthang Singsit, a youth, who was killed on March 8 in clashes after security forces opened fire, was laid to rest today at the Kuki-Zo Martyr Cemetery in Phaijang, Sadar Hills. His funeral was marked by an outpouring of grief and defiance, with leaders declaring him a martyr whose sacrifice would not be forgotten.
The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) condemned the circumstances of his death, stating that it reflected ongoing injustices against their people. As tributes poured in, community leaders vowed that Singsit’s death would not be in vain, reaffirming their commitment to their struggle for justice and dignity.

“His death, a heroic and noble act, has solidified his place in our history as a martyr, whose courage and commitment to our cause will forever be etched in the hearts of the Kuki-Zo community. His martyrdom will not go in vain, and we pledge to continue the struggle for justice and dignity on behalf of all Kuki-Zo people,” the KZC stated in its official release.

Following the ceremony, the KZC announced the lifting of the indefinite shutdown, effective 7:30 PM on March 13, 2025. However, they issued a strong statement opposing the Free Movement policy introduced by the Home Ministry, arguing that it undermines the justice process and weakens their cause.
“While the shutdown is lifted, we remain firm in our stance. The Free Movement policy will be vehemently resisted until justice is duly served for the Kuki-Zo people. Any move toward unrestricted free movement will be vigorously opposed,” said Khaikhohauh Gangte, Information Secretary of the Kuki-Zo Council.

The council reiterated its demand for a separate political administration, stating that it is the only path toward justice, peace, and progress for their people. They also urged authorities to recognize their legitimate demands and take steps toward a just resolution.
As tensions remain high, Kuki-Zo leaders warned that any attempt to enforce the Free Movement policy without addressing their grievances would be met with strong opposition.
