About 60 percent of the terrorists eliminated in Jammu and Kashmir last year were from Pakistan, Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi stated today while addressing the media regarding the situation at the Line of Control (LoC). He further stated that approximately 80 percent of terrorists still present in J&K are from Pakistan.
“The circumstances (in Jammu and Kashmir) are firmly managed. The ceasefire on the Line of Control, which has been in place since February 2021, is still holding strong. “Nevertheless, the terror infrastructure continues to exist,” Gen Dwivedi, who possesses extensive operational experience along the borders with Pakistan and China, informed reporters.
Gen Dwivedi stated that the infiltration efforts persist, including from the International Border (IB) area, coupled with drone attempts to illegally bring in arms and drugs.
He also mentioned that there has been a rise in terrorist actions in North Kashmir and the Doda-Kishtwar area in recent months, but he assured that the overall violence levels are “under control.”
“This time, we saw over five lakh pilgrims at the Amarnath Yatra, and the smooth conduct of the elections (Lok Sabha and Assembly) reflects a sign of positive change. The connection between terrorism and tourism is slowly becoming clear,” stated Gen Dwivedi, who took on the role of the 30th Chief of the Army Staff in June of the previous year.
Gen Dwivedi stated that the overall conditions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) are “sensitive” yet “stable,” following the disengagement of Indian and Chinese forces from the last two points of conflict in eastern Ladakh weeks ago.
“Patrolling and grazing in customary regions has commenced in Depsang and Demchok in eastern Ladakh,” he stated.
He also mentioned that the Army is concentrating on enhancing border infrastructure and improving capabilities.
