Tripura CM intervenes in the missing case of DU student Sneha Debnath. She was last seen near Signature Bridge, a notorious “blind spot” due to non-functional cameras. This isn’t just about Sneha, it’s about public safety. #SafeDelhi

BY PC Bureau

New Delhi: Nineteen-year-old Sneha Debnath, a Delhi University student from Tripura, has been missing for a week, and a suicide note recovered from her room suggests she may have ended her life. The note, found in her handwriting, states her intention to “end my life” by jumping from the Signature Bridge, citing feelings of being “a failure and burden.” It explicitly denies any “foul play,” stating it was “my decision.”

Sneha, a student at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, was last seen on July 7 when she reportedly went to drop a friend at Sarai Rohilla railway station. Her phone was switched off by 8:45 AM that day, and her friend later confirmed she had not met Sneha. A cab driver, however, informed the family he dropped her at the Signature Bridge, a location the family describes as a “critical spot” with dysfunctional CCTV cameras, creating a “huge blind spot.”

Extensive searches for Sneha, including a 7-kilometer radius scan by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on July 9, have yielded no results. Sneha had no belongings or cash withdrawals, and her bank balance remains unchanged. It is turning out to be a big mystery because had she committed suicide, her body would surely be located.

The family, including her ailing father, Subedar Major (Honorary Lieutenant) Pritish Debnath (retired), who is battling kidney failure, has desperately appealed for help. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha’s office has acknowledged the incident and instructed state police to assist in the search.

Family’s Allegations of Police Inaction and Manipulation

Sneha’s family has expressed frustration over the delay in filing a First Information Report (FIR), which was lodged more than 48 hours after her disappearance. They firmly believe that functional CCTV cameras on the Signature Bridge could have provided crucial answers.

Sneha’s sister, Bipasha Debnath, strongly questions the authenticity of the suicide note, stating it “makes no sense” and lacks any explanation for potential depression. She points out the unlikelihood of Sneha traveling to a location with non-functional cameras if she truly intended to end her life, suggesting the possibility of manipulation. “Even if she ran away, she would have made calls, right? They (cops) are not getting anything,” she told NDTV, implying the family feels they are doing more to investigate than the police.

A Plea for Help

The family has issued a heartfelt plea to the public, media, and authorities, emphasizing that Sneha should not become “just another missing person’s statistic.” They urge anyone with information, no matter how minor, to come forward and help find their daughter.
