January 25, 2026: The targeted killing of a 28-year-old Indian-origin man in Canada’s Burnaby city has triggered a major homicide investigation, with police indicating the shooting may be linked to an ongoing gang war in British Columbia.

The victim has been identified as Dilraj Singh Gill, a Vancouver resident who authorities say was known to police. Investigators believe the attack was deliberate and are examining its possible connection to the wider BC Gang conflict, which has seen a series of violent retaliatory attacks across the Lower Mainland.

According to Burnaby RCMP, frontline officers were dispatched just before 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 22, 2026, after multiple reports of shots fired near the 3700 block of Canada Way, a busy public corridor. When police arrived, they found Gill suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shortly afterward, officers responded to a vehicle fire in the 5000 block of Buxton Street. Investigators later confirmed that the burned vehicle was directly connected to the homicide, raising strong suspicions that it was used by the suspects in the attack or during their escape.

The case has now been taken over by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT). In a statement, investigators said the shooting “appears to have a nexus to the BC Gang conflict,” reinforcing concerns that organized crime violence continues to spill into public areas.

Sergeant Freda Fong said homicide investigators are working closely with Burnaby RCMP, the Lower Mainland District Integrated Forensic Identification Service (IFIS), and the BC Coroners Service to collect forensic evidence, track the movements of the suspects, and establish the sequence of events surrounding the killing.

“A shooting, especially in a public place, is extremely troubling—not only for police but for the entire community,” Fong said, adding that witness cooperation will be crucial to advancing the investigation and holding those responsible accountable.

Police are urging anyone who was in the area at the time of the shooting—or who may have dashcam or CCTV footage from Canada Way or nearby streets—to come forward. No arrests have been made so far, and the investigation remains ongoing.
