December 15, 2025: Dramatic new videos emerging from the deadly terrorist attack at Bondi Beach offer chilling insights into the police standoff with the gunmen and extraordinary acts of civilian bravery amid the chaos that claimed at least 15 lives during a Hanukkah celebration.
The attack occurred on December 14 during the “Chanukah by the Sea” event organized by Chabad of Bondi, where hundreds had gathered in Archer Park near the iconic beachfront for the first night of Hanukkah. Father-and-son duo Sajid Akram, 50, a fruit shop owner and licensed firearms holder, and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram, opened fire from a footbridge overlooking Campbell Parade. Authorities have declared the incident a targeted antisemitic terrorist attack.
Newly released and verified footage highlights both the tense police response and acts of civilian heroism. One widely circulated video, verified by outlets including The New York Times and Reuters, shows 43-year-old bystander Ahmed al Ahmed crouching behind a parked car before lunging at one of the gunmen. In a brief but intense struggle, he wrestled the long gun away, disarming the attacker and forcing him to retreat. Additional clips show police officers advancing under fire, taking cover behind vehicles, and ultimately engaging the shooters—Sajid Akram was killed at the scene, while Naveed Akram was critically injured and taken into custody.

Other videos depict Sajid Akram being confronted near parked cars, with bystanders throwing objects as he tried to flee after being disarmed. Meanwhile, shots continued from the footbridge, where Naveed was seen ducking and firing. The beachfront quickly became a scene of abandonment, littered with shoes, blankets, and personal items as panicked crowds scattered during the roughly ten-minute barrage.

Authorities later discovered improvised explosive devices in the duo’s vehicle, which were safely neutralized. Raids were conducted across Sydney’s south-west, including at the family’s home in Bonnyrigg. Reports indicate the attackers had told family members they were going on a fishing trip before carrying out the assault.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the violence as an “act of evil anti-Semitism” and a terrorist attack targeting Jewish Australians, pledging national unity and support for the community. “Australians across the board will embrace their fellow Australians of Jewish faith,” he said, while hinting at potential reforms to gun laws following the use of legally obtained weapons.

The Bondi Beach attack is Australia’s deadliest terror incident and its second-deadliest mass shooting. It comes amid a surge in antisemitic incidents across the country, far exceeding pre-2023 levels following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel and subsequent Gaza conflict. Australia’s Jewish population, estimated between 117,000 and 150,000, has faced heightened threats, including assaults, vandalism, and arson.
The newly surfaced videos not only underscore the terror inflicted on festival-goers but also spotlight remarkable courage by both civilians and law enforcement, providing a fuller, gripping portrait of the standoff that ultimately ended the rampage. Investigations continue into the attackers’ motives, weapon acquisition, and possible accomplices.
