In recent times, there has been a significant shift in the gaming scenario in India due to the increasing popularity of online gaming across the nation. India is experiencing an unprecedented surge in the gaming culture, whether it is through organized leagues and tournaments within the esports domain or through casual gaming on PCs or mobile devices.
Many reasons have contributed to the growth of gaming culture in India, most notably the expansion of broadband connectivity in Tier-II and Tier-III towns, as well as lower data rates and more reasonably priced smartphones that have made gaming more accessible to a wider range of users.
Online game streaming and viewing became popular during the closure as a substitute for social media and over-the-top (OTT) media consumption. All of the gaming industry’s sectors, including esports, web3 gaming, and casual gaming, are undergoing transition.
The Skillhub Online Games Federation is one such platform which has become highly popular in recent times due to its creative work in the field of gaming.
The SOGA run by the not-for-profit organisation Interactive Forum on Indian Economy has been very running a movement towards increasing the popularity of online gaming in India making it second to none.
IFIE in recent times has been organising conclaves across the country to create awareness about online gaming. One such conference was held in January 2024 where Former Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan ji made perceptive remarks about controlling the country’s online gaming market. He stressed the significance of regulating the online gaming industry, stating, “Nobody can stop the online skill gaming market as it grows globally. India should also aspire towards growing it, but the industry should be on the path of skill gaming only and not a chance-based game.”
At another such conclave organized the Natonal Economic Conclave, which was organized by IFIE n 28 February 2024 at Hyatt Regency, New Delhi, Union Minister Anurag Thakur stressed on addressing the ongoing concerns within the skill gaming industry.
During the conclave, Union Minister Anurag Singh Thakur said that there is immense potential in the skill gaming sector. He emphasized that sports and online gaming industry can contribute to the Indian economy in a big way. He also invited the Skillhub Online Games Federation to visit the Sports Ministry’s office to discuss their industry concerns.
