Background
On September 24, violence in Ladakh left four civilians dead and many injured. The incident has heightened concerns among Ladakhi students studying across the country, who said they are now anxious about the safety and rights of their families back home.
The detention of several peaceful protesters, along with the arrest of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, has further inflamed tensions. In their memorandum, students called Wangchuk “a source of inspiration who has always championed non-violence and service to Ladakh’s people.”
The associations closed their joint appeal with a message of hope: “We stand united for justice, peace, and harmony in Ladakh.”
By highlighting their demands through direct appeals and invoking democratic principles, the Ladakh student bodies have signaled that the September 24 incident has not only shaken the region but also galvanized a younger generation into collective action.
