KZC warns of systemic injustice as NIA’s case against Mate collapses; demands action against real perpetrators of violence.

September 28, 2025 – The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) has welcomed the grant of bail to Kuki Inpi spokesperson Thangminlen Mate by the Guwahati High Court in a case filed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), calling it undeniable evidence that members of the Kuki-Zo community have been wrongfully framed and vilified.
“The NIA’s conduct reveals disturbing bias, double standards, and political manipulation within India’s justice system. Innocent Kuki-Zos are targeted and persecuted, while the guilty roam free without consequence. Such actions deepen wounds, erode public trust, and embolden those who perpetrate violence with impunity,” the KZC said.
The KZC’s statement, signed by Ginza Vualzong, Secretary of Information & Publicity, attempts to highlight the community’s ongoing struggle for justice amid allegations of bias and manipulation within the country’s judicial and investigative systems.
The point is underscored by the fact that while granting bail to Mate, the Guwahati Court observed there was not even prima facie evidence against him and also highlighted several weaknesses and inconsistencies in the charges brought by the prosecution.

The KZC alleges that Mate’s arrest was part of a broader, calculated effort to target and malign the Kuki-Zo community. They claim that fabricated cases were initially manipulated by the state police before being handed over to the NIA, raising serious questions about the integrity of the investigative process.
“ These fabricated cases were initially manipulated by the already biased Manipur Police in collusion with then Chief Minister Biren Singh before being handed over to the NIA. This chain of prejudice—from local authorities to a national investigative body—taints the entire judicial process and undermines the principles of fairness and impartiality,” the KZC said.

The KZC further criticized the NIA’s conduct, citing what they describe as disturbing biases, double standards, and political manipulation within India’s justice system. They argue that innocent Kuki-Zo individuals are targeted while others, including killers of people like David Thiek, who was beheaded and burnt alive, and Arambai Tenggol chief Kurungamba Khuman, named in FIRs, continue to evade accountability.

“The real perpetrators of heinous crimes continue to enjoy impunity. The butcher of David Thiek, Arambai Tenggol leader Kurungamba Khuman, and others explicitly named in FIRs and backed by substantial evidence remain free, shielded from accountability. This glaring inaction is not just selective enforcement—it is a betrayal of justice and a direct assault on the dignity, security, and rights of the Kuki-Zo people, “the KZc said.
The lack of substantive evidence against Mate, coupled with the failure to act against those named in FIRs, represents selective enforcement, the KZC asserts, and a direct assault on the dignity, security, and rights of the Kuki-Zo people.
In its statement, the KZC demanded full accountability and warned that this injustice cannot and will not be ignored. “We demand accountability from the NIA and call for immediate, impartial action against those truly responsible for violence. Justice delayed is justice denied—and when justice is denied to one community, it is denied to all,” it said.
