With a medal guaranteed, India will now play in their first-ever semi-final against the victor of the other quarterfinal between top-seeded China and Japan

Indian women’s team wrote history by winning their first-ever medal at the Badminton Asia Team Championships, the Indian women’s team wrote history. The women’s team captained by PV Sindhu defeated Hong Kong 3-0 on Friday to advance to the semi-finals of the continental tournament in Selangor, Malaysia.

India, who defeated China on Tuesday to advance to the semi-finals, took advantage of their favorable quarter-final draw, with two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu leading the way once more.

Sindhu’s game showed no signs of rustiness. After a protracted injury layoff, the former world number two made a comeback and dominated Lo Sin Yan Happy in the opening game before losing badly in the second. In the match’s decider, Sindhu demonstrated his experience to help India take the lead by winning 21-7, 16-21, and 21-12.

In the meantime, India gained a 2-0 lead and moved one step closer to the semi-finals when Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa, the women’s doubles team, defeated world no. 18 Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam 21-10, 21-14.

With a 21-12, 21-13 triumph over Yeung Sum Yee, 24-year-old Ashmita Chaliha completed India’s victory and guaranteed their first-ever semi-final berth.

With a medal guaranteed, India will now play the victor of the other quarterfinal between China and the top-seeded Japanese team.

Later on in the day, the men’s Indian team will play Japan in the quarterfinal.

Women: India bt Hong Kong 3-0 (PV Sindhu bt Lo Sin Yan Happy 21-7, 16-21, 21-12; Tanisha Crasto/Ashwini Ponnappa bt Yeung Nga Ting/Yeung Pui Lam 21-10, 21-14; Ashmita Chaliha bt Yeung Sum Yee 21-12, 21-13).
