Coordinated operations across Manipur’s hill districts lead to the largest weapons seizure in recent months, including AK-series rifles, sniper guns, IEDs, and hand grenades.

BY PC Bureau

July 28 – In a major crackdown on illegal arms and militant activity, Manipur Police, in coordination with central paramilitary forces and the Indian Army, seized a massive cache of weapons and ammunition from various hill districts of the state. The joint operation, based on actionable intelligence, was carried out over the past several days across Churachandpur, Pherzawl, Kangpokpi, Chandel, and Tengnoupal districts.

According to a press release issued by the Director General of Police (DGP) Manipur, the operation led to the recovery of 155 weapons, 1,652 rounds of live ammunition, 39 improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and 13 hand grenades. The cache also included sophisticated arms such as AK-series rifles, M4 carbines, INSAS rifles, sniper rifles, self-loading rifles (SLRs), country-made firearms, and pistols.

In addition to arms and explosives, the forces recovered communication devices, including 15 wireless sets, 4 binoculars, and a telescope, indicating the possibility of coordinated militant operations.

“This operation is a significant step towards restoring peace and normalcy in the region,” the DGP’s statement said. “We are committed to neutralizing threats posed by illegal armed groups and ensuring the safety of the public.”

The seizures come in the backdrop of continued ethnic tensions and sporadic violence in the state, which began in May 2023. Security forces have intensified operations in recent months, targeting illegal arms stockpiles believed to be fuelling unrest in the state.

Earlier last week, a similar drive in the valley districts led to the recovery of 90 weapons and over 700 rounds of ammunition. Authorities believe that several weapons were looted from state police armouries during the initial outbreak of violence.

Manipur Police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, illegal weapons, or explosives to local authorities. “Public cooperation is crucial. These weapons are a threat to every civilian, and every recovery makes our communities safer,” an official said.

The arms have been handed over to forensic teams for examination, and investigations are ongoing to trace their origins and potential links to insurgent or ethnic groups.

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
