Legendary Telugu actor Kota Srinivasa Rao passed away in the early hours of 13 July 2025 at his Hyderabad residence. Known for his magnetic screen presence and unparalleled versatility, his demise leaves a profound void in Indian cinema
Born on 10 July 1942 in Kankipadu, then part of Madras Presidency, Kota was the son of Dr. Seetha Rama Anjaneyulu. Notably, he earned a BSc and briefly worked at a State Bank, his real calling lay in theatre, which he pursued passionately during his college years.

Kota made his silver-screen debut in Pranam Khareedu (1978). His portrayal of Kasaiah in Pratighatana cemented his reputation. From there, he seamlessly transitioned between commanding villain, wily comedian (often paired with Babu Mohan), and layered supporting characters
In a career span of over four decades, he acted in over 650 films across Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi. Notable works include Siva, Gaayam, Money, Athadu, Bommarillu, Rakta Charitra, Leader, and Aha Naa Pellanta.

He made a significant impact in Cinema with his distinctive voice, delivery of dialogue, and commanding presence on screen. Regardless of whether it was humor, antagonism, or character portrayals, he executed each with equal excellence.Â
Throughout his career, he earned nine Nandi Awards, a SIIMA Award in 2012, and the prestigious Padma Shri in 2015.

Political Foray
Beyond cinema, Kota served as MLA for Vijayawada East from 1999 to 2004, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party, demonstrating his dedication to public service beyond the screen as well.
Recognized for his honesty, practicality, and strong ties to his origins, Kota’s traits endeared him to numerous individuals who knew him intimately. His political roles on-screen were often as memorable as those in real life.
Personal life and legacy
Srinivasa Rao originally intended to become a doctor but could not succeed due to his passion for acting and then began his career performing in plays while in college. He possesses a Bachelor of Science degree and was employed at a State Bank prior to joining the film industry.
Rao is survived by his wife Rukmini and two daughters. On 20 June 2010, he tragically lost his son Kota Venkata Anjaneya Prasad in a road accident in Hyderabad. Meanwhile, Kota Sankara Rao, Srinivasa Rao’s younger brother, is also an actor. He is employed at a nationalized bank and performs in soap operas.
Known for his disciplined, humble nature and love for theatre, Srinivas Rao remained deeply respected by peers and fans alike.

Shortly after the news broke, tributes flooded in from the Telugu film industry, fans, and individuals from both the film and political sectors.
Tollywood superstar Chiranjeevi referred to Rao as a “multifaceted genius” in his lengthy message on X. Reflecting on his remarkable career, he acknowledged his powerful screen presence and shared sorrow over the “void” he has created.
Actor Ravi Teja, who worked with Srinivasa Rao in more than 10 films – such as ‘Nee Kosam’, ‘Annayya’, ‘Mirapakay’, and ‘Power’ – conveyed immense grief and reminisced about the significant impact the late actor had on his career.
Mohan Babu also shared his grief on X, stating, “Dear Kota, You will be missed. Profoundly. Your gift, your aura, your essence – memorable. At a deficit of language. Sending prayers for his family. Om Shanti.”
Rao’s departure is not only the loss of an iconic actor but also the goodbye of a narrator who inspired us to laugh, ponder, and experience emotions profoundly. His legacy will endure each time a new generation experiences the wonder of his shows.
