June 27, 2025 – In an unprecedented and embarrassing incident, as many as 19 vehicles in Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s convoy were rendered inoperable after being filled with water instead of diesel at a petrol pump. The blunder, which has sparked widespread outrage and raised questions about oversight at fuel stations, led to the immediate towing of all affected vehicles and the sealing of the implicated petrol pump for a thorough investigation.

The mishap occurred on Thursday evening when the Chief Minister’s convoy, comprising a fleet of official vehicles, stopped at a petrol pump in Bhopal to refuel. According to sources familiar with the matter, attendants at the fuel station mistakenly filled the diesel tanks of 19 vehicles with water, rendering them immobile. The vehicles, which included SUVs, security vans, and other official cars, were part of the Chief Minister’s high-security entourage.

The error came to light when the vehicles failed to start or stalled shortly after leaving the fuel station. Preliminary inspections by mechanics revealed the shocking mix-up: water had been pumped into the fuel tanks instead of diesel. This caused damage to the engines, necessitating the towing of all 19 vehicles to a nearby service center for repairs.

A senior official from the Madhya Pradesh Transport Department, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the sealing of the petrol pump was a precautionary measure to preserve evidence and determine the cause of the mix-up. “This is a serious lapse, and we are investigating whether it was a case of negligence, sabotage, or a technical error,” the official told PTI.

The incident has prompted a multi-agency probe involving the police, transport department, and fuel regulatory authorities. Initial inquiries suggest that the water may have been stored in a tank meant for diesel, possibly due to poor maintenance or mismanagement at the fuel station. Authorities are also examining whether the error was deliberate, given the high-profile nature of the Chief Minister’s convoy.

“We have registered a case under relevant sections of the law, and forensic teams are analyzing samples from the fuel station to ascertain how water ended up in the diesel supply,” an official said.], addressing the media on Friday. The investigation will also scrutinize the petrol pump’s operational protocols, employee training, and compliance with safety standards.

The incident has sparked a political firestorm in Madhya Pradesh, with opposition parties seizing the opportunity to criticize the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government. Congress leader and former Chief Minister Kamal Nath termed the incident “a glaring example of administrative failure” and demanded a high-level inquiry. “How can such a mistake happen in the Chief Minister’s convoy? This raises serious questions about the competence of the state government and the safety of its citizens,” Nath posted on X.

The investigation will uncover the truth, and those responsible will face consequences,” said [insert name or designation, e.g., BJP state spokesperson].

On social media platforms like X, the incident has become a topic of heated discussion, with users expressing a mix of shock, amusement, and concern. “Water in place of diesel for the CM’s convoy? This is beyond negligence—someone needs to be held accountable!” read one post. Others called for stricter regulations on fuel stations to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Despite the disruption, the Chief Minister’s office confirmed that his schedule remained largely unaffected, thanks to the availability of backup vehicles. The CM was reportedly traveling to [insert destination or purpose, e.g., a public event in Indore] when the incident occurred. Replacement vehicles were quickly arranged, allowing the convoy to resume its journey after a brief delay.

However, the incident has raised concerns about the reliability of fuel supply chains and the potential risks to high-security convoys. Experts have pointed out that such errors could have far-reaching consequences, particularly for emergency response vehicles or critical government operations.
