While PM Modi advocates diplomacy in talks with Iran’s president, Pakistan issues a sharp rebuke to Washington, calling the strikes a violation of global norms.

June 22, 2025 —Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spoke to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, expressing grave concern over the United States’ pre-dawn airstrikes on Iran’s key nuclear facilities. The PM called for an immediate de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East and urged all sides to return to dialogue and diplomacy.

Meanwhile, Pakistan condemned the US strikes, calling them a “violation of international law” and warning that further aggression could ignite a dangerous regional spiral. The statement from Islamabad came less than 24 hours after it nominated US President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, citing his role in preventing a previous standoff between India and Pakistan.

Modi’s Message: Peace Through Diplomacy

Following his call with President Pezeshkian, PM Modi posted on X (formerly Twitter):

“Spoke with President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian. We discussed in detail about the current situation. Expressed deep concern at the recent escalations. Reiterated our call for immediate de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward and for early restoration of regional peace, security and stability.”

The phone call followed a series of coordinated U.S. strikes on Iran’s Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear facilities early Sunday. President Donald Trump said the attacks aimed to dismantle Tehran’s nuclear programme and warned of further strikes if Iran retaliated.

Pakistan’s Strong Rebuttal

Shortly after the airstrikes, Pakistan’s Foreign Office issued a sharply worded statement denouncing the U.S. action. “The attacks violate all norms of international law,” it said. “Iran has the legitimate right to defend itself under the UN Charter.”

Islamabad further warned that “the unprecedented escalation of tensions and violence owing to ongoing aggression against Iran is deeply disturbing” and urged all sides to avoid further escalation, citing the threat of wider instability.

The statement came less than 24 hours after Pakistan had controversially nominated Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, citing his diplomatic efforts in preventing military escalation between India and Pakistan.

Pakistan also called for the protection of civilian lives and urged all stakeholders to return to the negotiating table. “Recourse to dialogue and diplomacy in line with the principles and purposes of the UN Charter remains the only viable pathway to resolve the crises in the region,” it said.

Global Concern and Strategic Repercussions

The coordinated U.S. strikes have sparked international alarm, with countries such as China, Russia, and several EU nations calling for restraint. Regional analysts warn the situation could spiral out of control, with repercussions on global energy supply lines, maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, and diplomatic alignments across South Asia and the Middle East.

India, which maintains strong trade and energy ties with both Iran and the United States, has thus far sought a cautious and diplomatic approach. New Delhi has not directly condemned the U.S. strikes but has instead stressed the importance of regional peace and dialogue.

Sunday’s developments now place further diplomatic pressure on India to balance its strategic interests, especially with Iran being a key partner in the Chabahar Port project and broader Central Asian connectivity goals.
