A 21-year-old Indian girl studying in Canada, who had been unaccounted for over the last three days, was discovered deceased on a beach close to her college in Ottawa, the Indian Embassy in Canada verified on Tuesday. Vanshika, the daughter of a local AAP politician from Punjab’s Dera Bassi, went missing on April 25, triggering a large-scale search effort.
“We are deeply saddened to be informed of the death of Ms. Vanshika, a student from India in Ottawa. The matter has been taken up with concerned authorities and the cause is under investigation as per local police,” the embassy announced.
Vanshika left home to see a rental room but never came back
Vanshika, as per a Facebook post requesting details about her, departed her residence between 8 to 9 pm on Friday, April 25, to look at a rental room and has not come back since. “Her phone has been switched off, and she missed an important exam today, which is very unusual for her,” the post read.

“Vanshika has been unaccounted for since the evening of Friday, April 25th, 2025, after she departed her home at 7 Majestic Drive at approximately 8-9 PM to see a rental room. Her phone was turned off at around 11:40 PM that night, causing her to miss a crucial exam the next day—an act entirely uncharacteristic for her. Despite considerable efforts from her family and friends, there has been no communication or news regarding her location,” an appeal from the Hindu Community in Ottawa stated.
Those familiar with her indicated that the student typically communicated with her family and friends each morning; however, nobody had received any word from her since April 25.
Father had last conversation with her on April 25
As per her father, Davinder Saini, he had his last conversation with his daughter on April 25, and she seemed fine throughout their talk.
On Tuesday, the Embassy verified her passing and announced that the issue has been addressed with the relevant authorities, with the cause now being investigated by local law enforcement. The officers conducting the investigation have not yet found Vanshika’s mobile phone.
Vanshika’s death occurs only days following the death of another Indian student in Canada, 21-year-old Harsimrat Randhawa, who was fatally struck by a stray bullet amid crossfire. She was standing at a bus stop when a bullet hit her amid a gunfight between two cars.
