A 39-year-old scientist, employed at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Mohali, has passed away following a parking altercation close to his rented residence in Sector 67 that escalated into violence.
On Tuesday night, Dr. Abhishek Swarnkar had a dispute with his neighbor Monty, who reportedly shoved him to the ground and punched him.
Hailing from Dhanbad in Jharkhand, Dr. Swarnkar was an esteemed scientist whose research appeared in global publications. He was employed in Switzerland and had just come back to India, where he became a project scientist at IISER.
The researcher had just received a kidney transplant, with his sister donating one of her kidneys. He was receiving dialysis treatment. After the attack, he was promptly taken to a hospital where he passed away.

Dr. Swarnkar resided with his parents in Sector 67 of Mohali. A CCTV camera captures several local residents, including Monty, standing near his bike.
Abhishek proceeds to the two-wheeler and begins taking it apart. A dispute ensues and Monty knocks Dr. Swarnkar down and begins hitting him. Their families step in and take Monty away. Dr. Swarnkar is observed on the ground prior to other neighbors emerging from their houses.
The family of the scientist has called for stringent measures against the accused.
Authorities stated they had filed a case of negligent homicide not amounting to murder and were reviewing the CCTV recordings to strategize their further action. They stated that the accused, Monty, is fleeing, and operations are underway to catch him. Police are also monitoring Monty’s phone to locate him.
The unfortunate death of the scientist has once more highlighted how parking conflicts in major cities are becoming violent. Previously, clips of neighbors arguing over parking spots in Delhi and other big cities have become popular online.
