British PM Stream joins the chorus of criticism, labeling Trump’s Gaza Riviera plan as ‘wildly impractical and politically insensitive.'”

London, Washington, Tel Aviv, and Beyond — President Donald Trump’s recent proposal to transform the conflict-ridden Gaza Strip into a “Riviera for the Middle East” has sparked widespread reactions from world leaders, eliciting responses ranging from cautious optimism to outright condemnation.

British Prime Minister’s Response

British Prime Minister Stream, during a press briefing outside 10 Downing Street, struck a measured tone, stating that while investment in the Middle East is vital for peace and prosperity, any redevelopment efforts in Gaza must respect the rights and aspirations of the Palestinian people.

“We welcome initiatives aimed at fostering peace and economic development in Gaza,” Stream said. “However, such proposals must be pursued in consultation with all stakeholders and align with a two-state solution framework. Gaza’s transformation cannot come at the cost of its people’s dignity and sovereignty.”

European Union’s Response

The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Maria von Hauser, expressed skepticism, stating that the plan lacked critical political groundwork.

“Economic development alone is not a panacea,” von Hauser remarked. “Any sustainable solution requires addressing the root causes of the conflict, including the blockade and the right to self-determination for Palestinians.”

Israeli Prime Minister’s Reaction

Israeli Prime Minister Eliav Ben-David welcomed the proposal, emphasizing the potential economic benefits for both Israelis and Palestinians.

“A peaceful and prosperous Gaza would contribute to regional stability,” Ben-David said. “We are willing to cooperate with international partners to explore viable solutions that promote peace and prosperity for all.”

However, Ben-David refrained from commenting on the political feasibility of the plan, given the longstanding tensions in the region.

Palestinian Authority’s Outrage

The Palestinian Authority denounced the proposal as “insulting and detached from reality.” President Mahmoud Abbas issued a scathing statement condemning the plan.

“This is not a development proposal; it is a scheme to erase our identity and rights,” Abbas declared. “The Palestinian people demand freedom, not beachfront resorts.”

Hamas, which governs Gaza, similarly rejected the proposal, labeling it as a “cynical attempt to divert attention from the ongoing occupation and blockade.”

United Nations Warning

The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres cautioned against viewing economic development as a substitute for political resolution.

“While economic investment is welcome, it must be part of a comprehensive peace process,” Guterres said. “The rights and voices of the Palestinian people cannot be marginalized.”

Arab League and Gulf States

The Arab League issued a unified statement rejecting the proposal, calling it “naïve and disrespectful.” However, Gulf states such as the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain appeared more open to exploring aspects of the plan, provided it was coupled with political concessions.

“We are always willing to support projects that improve the lives of the Palestinian people,” said UAE Foreign Minister Anwar Gargash. “But any initiative must respect their legitimate aspirations.”

Analysts Weigh In

Political analysts have been quick to point out the logistical and political challenges of transforming Gaza into a luxury coastal destination.

“The region is still under a crippling blockade, and the infrastructure is in shambles,” said Middle East expert Dr. Leila Mansour. “While the idea may be well-intentioned, it is wildly impractical without a political solution.”

Public Reaction

The proposal has ignited debates on social media, with hashtags such as #GazaRiviera and #PeaceOrFantasy trending globally. While some users expressed hope for a new chapter in Gaza’s history, others criticized the plan as out of touch with the region’s complex realities.

As reactions continue to pour in, it remains unclear how President Trump’s proposal will be received in diplomatic circles in the long term. One thing is certain: any plan for Gaza must navigate the intricate web of political, social, and historical challenges that have long defined the region.

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
