Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata has confirmed that MLAs of the National People’s Party (NPP) will sit on the Opposition bench in the upcoming Assembly session starting on February 10.
Alongside MANI-REDA Chairman Kongkham Robindro and PDA Chairman Lourembam Rameshwar, Satyabrata inaugurated a newly constructed multipurpose hall at Mayang Imphal Thana Awang Leikai today.
In response to media queries during the event, the Speaker clarified that NPP MLAs would indeed sit on the Opposition bench. He also mentioned that he could not disclose all details of his recent meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi. Despite NPP being a partner of NDA, the NPP president has officially announced the party’s withdrawal of support from the Biren Government. A directive from the NPP president has been received, requesting that NPP MLAs be seated on the Opposition bench, Satyabrata added. He emphasized that the public is well aware of which parties are in the ruling coalition and which are in Opposition.

Regarding the disqualification petitions filed by the Congress party against five NPP MLAs under the Constitution’s 10th Schedule, Satyabrata stated that it is too early to comment on the matter. The petitions will be thoroughly examined. The five NPP MLAs facing disqualification petitions are Kh Loken (Wangoi AC), Thongam Shanti (Moirang AC), I Nalini (Oinam AC), Janghemlung Panmei (Tamenglong AC), and Mayanglambam Rameshwar (Kakching AC).

When asked about his recent meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Satyabrata mentioned that the discussion focused on reconciling differences among the ruling legislators. He noted that various media reports about the meeting were based on speculation, as he had not spoken to the media about it. The meeting aimed to ensure a smooth and peaceful Assembly session, given the apparent rift among the MLAs. Satyabrata reiterated that there was no special reason for the meeting and that he could not share all details with the media.
Addressing a query about his speech at the inaugural function, where he hinted that Kongkham Robindro might soon receive a Cabinet berth, Satyabrata clarified that he was merely appreciating Robindro’s development work in his Assembly segment. He stated that Robindro deserves a Cabinet berth if there is a Ministry reshuffle. When asked about the possibility of a Ministry reshuffle, the Speaker responded, “I said if there is a Ministry reshuffle.”
Notably, the multipurpose hall inaugurated today was constructed by MLA Kongkham Robindro.
