President-elect Donald Trump has reignited his controversial push for the United States to acquire Greenland, sharing a social media post Monday that featured a Greenlander advocating for the purchase of the Arctic territory.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump shared a video of a Greenlander wearing a MAGA hat. When asked what he would say to Trump, the man replied, “Buy us. Buy Greenland.” He criticized Danish governance, accusing Denmark of exploiting Greenland’s rich mineral resources while failing to provide adequate benefits to the island.

“We don’t want to be colonized by the Danish government anymore,” the man said in the video. “We get ripped off every year with our minerals. We are the richest nation in the world, but we don’t get to use it. Denmark’s using us too much.”
Trump endorsed the sentiment, claiming that Greenland could thrive under American control. He announced that his son, Donald Trump Jr., would soon visit the island to explore its “magnificent areas,” clarifying that the trip would be personal and not involve official discussions.
“I am hearing that the people of Greenland are ‘MAGA,'” Trump wrote. “Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our nation. We will protect it and cherish it.”
This renewed push follows Trump’s earlier statements about the strategic importance of Greenland, which he framed as vital for U.S. national security and global freedom.
Greenland’s Leadership Rejects Trump’s Proposal
Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Egede, promptly dismissed Trump’s remarks, reiterating that Greenland is not for sale.
“Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale,” Egede said. He also reaffirmed his pro-independence agenda, calling for full autonomy from Denmark.
Egede criticized Denmark’s colonial legacy, stating, “Cooperation with the Kingdom of Denmark has not succeeded in creating full equality. It is time for Greenland to take the next step toward independence.”
Greenland’s Political and Historical Context
Greenland, the world’s largest island, is home to approximately 60,000 residents. While it achieved self-government in 1979 and gained further autonomy in 2009, the territory remains under Danish control for foreign affairs and defense. Greenland has the right to pursue full independence through a referendum, a prospect that has garnered increasing support from its leadership.
Despite Trump’s renewed enthusiasm, Greenland’s leadership remains steadfast in its refusal, emphasizing their vision of self-determination and freedom from colonial ties.
