Embattled Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to resign as the leader of the Liberal Party on Monday due to increasing pressure from within the party to step down, The Globe and Mail reported, referencing sources.

The development arises as surveys indicate that Trudeau’s Liberals are facing a significant defeat against the opposition Conservatives in the federal election scheduled for October this year. It also arrives less than a month after Chrystia Freeland resigned as the nation’s finance minister and deputy prime minister.

Sources informed The Globe and Mail that Trudeau’s choice to resign might come prior to an important national caucus gathering on Wednesday. It remains uncertain if Trudeau would step down right away or continue as prime minister until a new leader is chosen.

Parliament is currently closed for the holidays until late next month; however, the leftist New Democratic Party announced it would initiate a vote of no confidence in Trudeau once lawmakers return on January 27. Due to Trudeau’s Liberals lacking an outright majority in Parliament, they have relied on the NDP’s support for years to enact legislation and maintain power.

Several MPs demanded Trudeau’s resignation

Over the past month, multiple MPs have called for the resignation of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh urged Trudeau to step down and stated explicitly that the NDP will support a vote to topple the government. “Regardless of who heads the Liberal Party, the time for this government has come to an end.” “Singh stated in a letter issued just prior to the Cabinet reshuffle, ‘We will propose a straightforward motion of non-confidence in the upcoming session of the House of Commons.”

In a separate video, Jagmeet Singh stated, “I am urging Justin Trudeau to step down, he must leave.” Currently, Canadians are facing challenges with the cost of living – I notice it wherever I travel. Individuals struggle to locate an affordable home, they are unable to purchase their groceries, and additionally, we have Trump issuing threats of 25% tariffs, jeopardizing the jobs of hundreds of thousands of Canadians.”

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
