MCD orders Delhi schools to identify illegal Bangladeshi migrant students; sparks row

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has instructed schools to locate illegal Bangladeshi migrant children and guarantee that they do not receive birth certificates. The directive follows closely behind the Delhi L-G Secretariat’s order to tackle illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, as the matter intensifies the ongoing conflict between the ruling AAP and the BJP in the lead-up to Assembly elections.

The municipal authority has instructed all MCD zones to clear encroachments made by unauthorized Bangladeshi migrants. The MCD deputy commissioner has requested an action taken report by December 31.

“The education department will take appropriate preventive measures to identify illegal Bangladeshi migrants while giving admission in municipal schools. It is also requested that proper identification and verification drives may also be undertaken to identify the illegal Bangladeshi migrant children in schools,” the order by the deputy commissioner said.

AAP calls directive a bid to humiliate Purvanchali Community

In response to the directive, AAP MP Sanjay Singh stated that the MCD’s order aimed to insult and disrespect the Purvanchali community under the pretext of addressing illegal migrants. Singh further charged BJP national president JP Nadda with comparing Purvanchalis to “Rohingya infiltrators” and “Bangladeshis.” Rohingyas are a Muslim minority community originating from Myanmar.

“They want to humiliate the poor from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Through this order, they want to threaten Purvanchalis, their kids and bulldoze their shops and houses in jhuggis,” the Rajya Sabha MP said.

Purvanchalis, who are migrants from eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, comprise about 42 percent of the electorate in Delhi. The community has power in almost half of Delhi’s 70 Assembly constituencies, covering important regions like Burari, Laxmi Nagar, and Dwarka.

Sanjay Singh referenced a 2022 post on X by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri to allege that the BJP is accommodating Rohingyas in EWS apartments in Bakkarwala, Delhi. “The BJP, along with Hardeep Puri and Amit Shah, are aware of the locations where Bangladeshi and Rohingya people reside. They reside in Bakkarwala. If you wish to take action against undocumented migrants, go there,” Singh stated.

Nonetheless, Puri has earlier emphasized a clarification from the Centre that no instructions were given by it to allocate flats to unlawful Rohingya immigrants.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
