On Friday, the BJP launched an unprecedented attack on the US State Department and its so-called ‘deep state,’ a move rarely seen from any Indian political party, except perhaps the Communists, or the Central government itself. While this outburst seemed triggered by the US Justice Department’s indictment of industrialist Gautam Adani, a closer look reveals deeper, more strategic motivations—possibly aimed at aligning with former President Donald Trump’s ongoing battle against the US ‘deep state.’
The BJP’s rhetoric mirrors Trump’s recent calls to dismantle the ‘deep state,’ which he claims undermines American democracy through corrupt bureaucratic structures. Trump’s comprehensive plan includes reshaping federal governance, particularly targeting the intelligence and national security sectors. With promises to restore presidential authority to remove “rogue bureaucrats,” Trump aims to address what he perceives as the weaponization of government agencies against political opponents.
While Prime Minister Narendra Modi has traditionally lauded the US as a vital ally, the BJP’s attack on the US government is a notable shift. The assault on the US ‘deep state’ comes amid the political firestorm over the Adani indictment, which opposition leaders like Rahul Gandhi have used to accuse Modi’s government of crony capitalism and complicity with the Adani Group.
BJP Accuses US Media and Opposition of Colluding Against India
Sambit Patra, a prominent BJP spokesperson, went further by alleging that the US ‘deep state’ had conspired with foreign journalists and Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi to undermine India’s development. He dismissed recent reports by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) as baseless, accusing the media outlet of being a pawn in a coordinated effort to target the Adani Group and destabilize the Modi administration.
In the wake of these claims, the BJP pointed to a French report which indicated that 50% of OCCRP’s funding comes from the US State Department and figures like George Soros, whom Patra accused of leading a “dangerous triangle” seeking to destabilize India.
Political Fallout and Diplomatic Tensions
The BJP’s scathing remarks against the US government mark a stark departure from Modi’s usual diplomatic stance. While the ruling party attempts to shift the narrative by positioning itself against a foreign conspiracy, the growing controversy surrounding Adani continues to put the Modi government under intense scrutiny, particularly regarding allegations of favoritism toward the conglomerate.
This political fallout highlights the increasingly complex intersection of domestic and international politics, with foreign funding of media outlets and the role of international actors in India’s political discourse now under intense scrutiny. As both the BJP and Congress escalate their rhetoric, the Adani saga remains central to India’s polarized political landscape
