The Telangana government prohibited raw egg mayonnaise for safety reasons after a number of food poisoning cases associated with mayonnaise in the state. The directive was given one day after the death of one individual and the sickness of 15 others after eating momos in Hyderabad.
Authorities suggest alternative options to safeguard public health
The ban started on Wednesday and will last for one year, while officials are promoting different ways to make mayonnaise in order to enhance food safety and protect public health.
Food safety officials have linked a number of recent contamination cases in the state to the consumption of egg-based mayonnaise, which is commonly used in dishes such as sandwiches, momos, shawarma, and Al Faham chicken. The process involves blending egg yolks with oil, typically mixed with vinegar or lemon juice for added flavor.

Food Safety Commissioner orders prohibition citing Food Safety Act
“As per the observations during enforcement activities and complaints received from the public in the state of Telangana, mayonnaise made from raw eggs is suspected to be a cause of food poisoning in multiple incidents in the past few months,” Telanaga Food Safety Commissioner said in the order.
Citing the Food Safety Act that empowers the authorities to take action “in cases where there are reasonable grounds to suspect that a food may present a risk for human health,” the Commissioner ordered prohibition of the “production, storage and sale of mayonnaise prepared from raw eggs for a period of one year with immediate effect from 30.10.2024”.
Public to be informed about possible health dangers
The government notification also mentioned that the public will be informed about possible health dangers related to food products when there is valid reason for concern.
A 31-year-old woman passed away on Tuesday after consuming momos from a store in Hyderabad, and fifteen other people became sick from eating the same snack from different shops. A preliminary inquiry discovered that these vendors obtained the momos from the identical supplier.
A few days ago, there were instances of food poisoning reported at a shawarma shop, leading health officials to carry out inspections at shawarma and mandi eateries throughout the city.
