The investigation into the rape and death of a trainee doctor in Kolkata was given to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday.
The parents of the trainee doctor were presenting a plea to a division bench led by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam. They wanted a court-monitored investigation into the issue. There were also several more applications filed asking for a CBI investigation into it.
The High Court highlights lapses in the probe
The High Court noted the probe’s shortcomings in its ruling and stated that, even after five days, there had been no appreciable advancement in the inquiry.
According to the court, the victim’s parents are concerned that allowing the investigation to continue in this manner will lead to a derailment.
“Under normal circumstances, we would have called for a report. But the case is peculiar. And the facts warrant appropriate orders without loss of time. Without significant progress in the investigation, we would be well justified in accepting the prayers by the victim’s parents that evidence would be destroyed,” the bench said as it transferred the investigation to the CBI.

Body of trainee doctor found in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9
On August 9, in the early hours of the day, the postgraduate trainee’s body was discovered in a seminar hall at the RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. The following day, Sanjay Roy, a volunteer for the community, was taken into custody in relation to the crime. He was taken into custody and told the police what he had done.
A four-page autopsy report of the victim revealed that the woman was bleeding from her private parts and there were injury marks on other parts of her body.
Sandip Ghosh resigned as Principal of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Monday, citing backlash over the rape and death of a trainee doctor. However, he was soon appointed principal of another college.
