In the interview, Guru Satpal Singh explained the circumstances surrounding Vinesh’s disqualification. He emphasized the rigorous process of weight management that wrestlers undergo before their matches. “There is a weigh-in before the game, for which half an hour is given. Then the bout starts after three hours. Every wrestler comes after losing 3-4 kgs of weight, and they start reducing weight 2-4 days before,” he said.
Vinesh Phogat, who had successfully won all her previous bouts, faced a critical moment when her weight increased after consuming protein post-match. Despite her best efforts to shed the excess weight—reportedly even cutting her hair—Vinesh was unable to meet the weight requirement. “The country lost its medal by 100 grams. Vinesh is the Sushil [Kumar] of women’s wrestling,” Satpal remarked, highlighting her dedication and skill.
Why Would Any Player Risk Their Medal?
Satpal Singh strongly refuted any allegations that Vinesh Phogat was careless in her weight management. “Why would any player who knows that silver or gold is certain increase their weight? Vinesh’s passion for the country was not less. I knew that Vinesh would definitely bring a medal in 50 kg,” he asserted.

When asked about the role of nutritionists, Satpal clarified that while weight fluctuations can happen due to various factors, Vinesh’s disqualification was a matter of unfortunate timing and luck. “Once the weight is determined, you can reduce it. But the match went on all night and the circumstances were such then. Vinesh is a perfect player; she would have won the gold,” he said.
Fake News and Misconceptions
Addressing rumors about Vinesh’s disqualification and whether a wrestler can still secure a medal if injured, Satpal Singh dismissed these as false. “I think this is completely wrong news. Because you will have to give the weight, whether you wrestle or not. It is necessary to go to the weight; if you do not give the weight, then you will still be disqualified,” he clarified.
Mental Strength is Key
Guru Satpal also spoke about the psychological impact of such an incident on other players. “I believe that it should not affect [other players]. Although mentally it feels a little that our player has lost the gold, the player has to give the performance, no excuse is accepted here. Because we are in the Olympics, no excuse works here. Here you have to keep yourself mentally strong,” he advised.
