A man was detained on Tuesday for reportedly murdering a 20-year-old lady, whose body was discovered in the bushes near a railway station in Navi Mumbai’s Uran. Dawood Sheikh was apprehended in Karnataka’s Shahpur Hill district following a two-day manhunt by Maharashtra police.

Motive of the murder yet to be ascertained

According to Amit Kale, DCP, Crime Branch, Navi Mumbai, Dawood admitted to killing Yashashree Shinde. However, the motive has yet to be determined. The DCP stated that Dawood was hiding with his relatives in Karnataka.

Police said Dawood, against whom the victim’s family filed a POCSO case in 2019, was a Bengaluru resident who traveled to Uran on July 22 to see the woman.

Woman’s family filed complaint at the Uran police station after she went missing

The woman’s family filed a report with the Uran police station after she went missing on Thursday morning. The woman worked for a private enterprise in Belapur.

On Saturday, her body was discovered in the bushes near the railway station. Her stomach and back were stabbed many times. The woman’s face was similarly disfigured, but authorities claimed it may have been caused by wild animals or dogs.

A case under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was filed, and eight teams were established to find the accused.

DCP Kale stated that the postmortem report revealed no indication of sexual assault. Dawood killed the girl by stabbing her with a knife. When they discovered the body, eyewitnesses reported dogs eating the girl’s face,” he stated.

Deepak Sakore, Additional Commissioner (Crime), Navi Mumbai, said the accused and the victim had met on the day of the murder. “The family of the victim had filed a POCSO case against the accused in 2019. But they were in touch with each other,” Sakore said.
