Massive landslides rocked the mountainous areas around Meppadi in Kerala’s Wayanad district on Tuesday morning, killing 24 people and leaving hundreds feared stranded. Rescue operations have involved multiple agencies, including the NDRF and the Army.

Indian Army personnel deployed for rescue operations

Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha were among the most severely impacted villages. According to a statement, the Indian Army has dispatched 225 personnel, including medical teams. Two Air Force helicopters, a Mi-17 and an ALH (Advanced Light Helicopter), have also been put into service.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and promised him that the Centre will provide all necessary assistance in dealing with the crisis.

The Prime Minister’s Office has announced a Rs 2 lakh compensation for the families of those who died in the landslides. The injured will receive Rs 50,000.

A supposed video shared by West Coast Weatherman on X depicted the location of landslides in the area, which is famed for its stunning landscapes.

Two teams of Kannur Defence Security Corps instructed to move to Wayanad

According to a Facebook post by the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), two teams from the Kannur Defence Security Corps have been instructed to travel to Wayanad to assist in rescue attempts.

Rescue operations are being hindered due to incessant rain.

“Since we got to know of the incident, the government systems have joined together in the rescue operation. Ministers will visit Wayanad and lead the activities,” the Chief Minister said.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
