Thirteen individuals, comprising three Navy personnel and 10 civilians, perished when a boat with 110 passengers overturned on Wednesday near the Mumbai coast due to a collision with a Navy speedboat. Although 99 individuals have been saved, efforts continue to find numerous others.
The vessel, called Neelkamal, was transporting passengers from the Elephanta Islands, a well-known tourist spot close to Mumbai, to the Gateway of India when it was struck by a Navy speedboat that had gone out of control.
The Navy stated that the speedboat was a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) conducting engine tests and lost control because of an engine failure.
Video clips from the location depict passengers in life jackets being saved and moved to another ferry as pandemonium occurred.
A passenger recorded the video, which showed the speedboat going around the ferry prior to colliding with it.
A large search operation is in progress, during which 11 Navy vessels, three Marine Police boats, and one Coast Guard boat are active in the region.
Moreover, four helicopters, assets from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, and community fishermen are contributing to the operation.
