Mizoram continues to be a major transit point for drug trafficking, with law enforcement agencies making yet another massive seizure. In a joint operation, the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police recovered 7.1 kg of methamphetamine tablets and 3.1 kg of crystal methamphetamine, with a total estimated value of ₹71.15 crore in Zokhawthar, Champhai district near the Indo-Myanmar border.
The operation, conducted on February 18, 2025, led to the recovery of six packets of methamphetamine tablets and three packets of crystal methamphetamine, concealed in the General Area Vangkai. One individual was arrested in connection with the case, though authorities have yet to disclose further details about the suspect and their links to larger trafficking networks.
This seizure is the latest in a series of high-profile drug busts in Mizoram, which has become a critical route for narcotics smuggled from Myanmar. Zokhawthar, Champhai district, where the drugs were recovered, is a known hotspot for cross-border trafficking due to its proximity to Myanmar and its porous border.

Myanmar Connection and the Golden Triangle Nexus
Mizoram’s increasing drug trafficking problem is directly linked to its 510-km border with Myanmar, a key route for narcotics from the infamous Golden Triangle—the notorious drug-producing region spanning Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand. Since the 2021 Myanmar military coup, instability in the region has fueled a surge in illegal activities, including drug smuggling.

Officials believe that Mizoram is now being used as a transit hub for traffickers moving large drug consignments into mainland India. The recent unrest in neighboring Manipur has only exacerbated the issue, with criminals using Mizoram as an alternate route for smuggling narcotics.
Law enforcement agencies are stepping up vigilance along the Indo-Myanmar border, with increased coordination between Mizoram Police, Assam Rifles, Border Security Force (BSF), and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). However, the porous border and challenging terrain make enforcement difficult.
Authorities have called for more resources, manpower, and technological support to combat drug trafficking effectively. The latest seizures underscore the scale and urgency of the crisis, as Mizoram remains at the center of India’s battle against the narcotics trade.
